Kindle

9

There is no better way to read e-books than on the stunningly simple Kindle app. The storefront is easy to navigate, and the selection of titles runs deeper than the plot of a Haruki Murakami novel, chockablock with both full-length tomes and Kindle Singles (the perfect commuter fare ? not so short that you don?t care, not so long that it outlasts your ride).

Responding to the modern reader?s desire to consume on multiple platforms, the app automatically syncs your progress through a story across devices. Start a book on your phone during your morning commute, pick it up again at lunchtime on your desktop, bide time on the treadmill on your Kindle DX, then really dive in before bed on your tablet ? all without losing your place. Your notes, highlights, and annotations follow you as you go.

For iOS, there?s also bonus video and audio content, like author interviews, in the enhanced Kindle Editions. And Amazon recently added a web-based social networking component so you can see what your friends have been reading and check out their notes and highlights. Our only complaint: There?s no easy way to go back and reread a book. Once you finish, it automatically syncs to the end and requires multiple steps to reset. But while you?re still swiping pages, the adjustable screen brightness, color, and text layout make the Kindle easier on the eyes than Natalie Portman, and just as smart.

Air Force Extends Secret Space Plane's Mysterious Mission

The Air Force?s mysterious X-37B space plane just got a little more mysterious. The 29-foot-long reusable mini-shuttle was designed to spend up to 270 days in orbit. The 270th day of the winged spacecraft?s second flight is today, but the military has no intentions of bringing the billion-dollar robotic vehicle back to Earth just yet. ?It?s still up there,? Maj. Tracy Bunko told MSNBC.

Exactly what the X-37B is doing is a secret. The Air Force insists the X-37B, built by Boeing in its soon-to-closed Huntington Beach facility, is meant only for conducting orbital science experiments in its pickup-bed-size cargo bay, but analysts say the X-37B is capable of much more than that. It could be an orbital spy. It could even be used to sneak up on and tamper with enemy satellites. It could haul small batches of supplies to the International Space Station. In October, Boeing program manager Art Grantz proposed to build an enlarged X-37C model that could also carry astronauts to the station, filling a gap left by the retired NASA Space Shuttle.

Whatever it?s up to, the X-37B will be doing it longer than anyone imagined when the diminutive spacecraft launched atop an Atlas rocket for the first time in April last year. The Air Force said last year that the X-37B could last nine months in orbit before its power and fuel ran out. (In comparison, the longest manned shuttle mission lasted just 17 days.) In October, Air Force program manager Lt. Col. Tom McIntyre said an extension might be possible. Now it appears the Air Force is taking it day by day, carefully monitoring the X-37B ?as it sips power and fuel like a Prius,? in the words of one source involved in the development of military spacecraft.

?It?s working so well that they are thumbing their noses at everyone else as they break their own records, and rightly so,? the source said of the Air Force.

The Air Force ?gets greedy on X missions,? the insider added, using shorthand for ?experimental? missions. In other words, the flying branch will want to squeeze every ounce of utility out of a unique spacecraft. The insider said it?s also possible that another spacecraft ? a satellite, most likely ? is slated to take over some of the X-37B?s duties once the space plane lands. If that satellite got diverted for emergency use over, say, Afghanistan, then the X-37B would need to stay in orbit longer.

It?s not clear how long the X-37B might hold out. Once in space, the airplane-shaped X-37B unfurls solar panels to soak up the sun?s energy, stretching its power supply. But there?s no way to top off the onboard rocket fuel that allows the vehicle to maneuver. All the same, careful planning could extend the mission to a full year, in theory. ?It could be on station into April for all I know,? the insider told Danger Room.

That would really be something to brag about.

What does SOA bring to Agile? Or Agile to SOA?

Summary: Relationship between Agile and service oriented architecture seems like a natural fit ? both philosophies focus on making technology more flexible and adaptable to changing business requirements.

We?ve just passed the ten-year anniversary of the first publication of the Agile Manifesto, which laid a philosophical and best-practices foundation for tighter and more effective collaboration between business and technology folks.

While Agile has been around more than a decade, I?m finding lately there has been more discussion than ever on how it fits into today?s digital economy. There are extensions, if you will, into business intelligence and data integration (Agile BI and Agile DI). It?s vital to efforts to pursue ?Lean IT.?

The relationship between Agile and service oriented architecture seems like a natural fit ? both philosophies focus on making technology more flexible and adaptable to changing business requirements. But where and how, exactly, do Agile and SOA come together?

Antonio Bruno, project manager, software engineer and Scrum product owner recently explored the Agile-SOA connection in Service Technology, explaining how each approach enriches the other:

?SOA introduces a controlled environment in which changes are accommodated in support of Agile processes, where quality, efficiency and productivity are increased through the appliance of design patterns, standards and governance procedures. Design patterns like service reusability, composability and abstraction, to cite a few, are leveraged to provide flexible and adaptable ecosystems. Agile methods also enable the lifecycle to be more incremental and interactive, allowing the business to get/give faster feedback from/to IT. They both support the continuous business-IT cycle that is needed to allow businesses to set up strategies aligned with IT.?

A good match, in other words. Bruno also observes that without SOA, Agile ends up being employed ?on legacy applications or ad-hoc integration architecture,? which leads to ?fragmenting the requirement backlog into chunks of deliverables that the business side can run into earlier.?

When adopting Agile without service orientation, ?you have to expect high development efforts along with an increased IT burden and TCO costs,? he adds.

Likewise, SOA will not deliver its expected value to the business if there aren?t Agile approaches to support software deployments. As Bruno put it: ?IT often represents a rigid machine that evolves and reacts to changes independently and differently from the business. Similarly, an IT framework that is reactive to change is not enough for it to be considered fully agile in support of the business, if changes are not driven by Agile processes.?

Additional note: The 2009 SOA Manifesto was very much written in the spirit of the Agile Manifesto, and its values and principles map very closely to those of Agile.

Facebook?s 40 Most Shared Articles for 2011

It?s nearing the end of 2011 and so it?s time for every American media outlet to once again contribute to their annual national birthright: compiling lists!

One of the better compilations to be released today is Facebook?s Most Shared Articles for this year, which presents an intriguing glimpse into what captivated and resonated with the gaze of the nation. Articles covering momentous events repeat throughout the list, such as news of the earthquake in Japan (four articles) and reassurance that, no, your zodiac sign hasn?t changed (three articles). Perhaps most unsurprising about the list of articles is the topic that people just couldn?t sharing about: parenting advice (seven articles!).

With more and more news websites incorporating Facebook?s user interface to share, like, or comment on articles, Facebook has become the premiere news outlet amongst friends. Seriously, can you even count how many times you?ve heard the phrase, ?Oh yeah, I saw that on Facebook?? Add to the mix the success of news apps, such as The Washington Post?s, and it becomes clear that, as more people adopt to finding and sharing their news via social media, Facebook appears to control the cultural barometer of this American era.

The list follows:

Researcher's Video Shows Secret Software on Millions of Phones Logging Everything

The Android developer who raised the ire of a mobile-phone monitoring company last week is on the attack again, producing a video of how the Carrier IQ software secretly installed on millions of mobile phones reports back most everything a user does on a phone.

Though the software is installed on most modern Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones, Carrier IQ was virtually unknown until 25-year-old Trevor Eckhart of Connecticut analyzed its workings, revealing that the software secretly chronicles a user?s phone experience ? ostensibly so carriers and phone manufacturers can do quality control.

But now he?s released a video actually showing the logging of text messages, encrypted web searches and, well, you name it.

Eckhart labeled the software a ?rootkit,? and the Mountain View, California-based software maker threatened him with legal action and huge money damages. The Electronic Frontier Foundation came to his side last week, and the company backed off on its threats. The company told Wired last week that Carrier IQ?s wares are for ?gathering information off the handset to understand the mobile-user experience, where phone calls are dropped, where signal quality is poor, why applications crash and battery life.?

The company denies its software logs keystrokes. Eckhart?s 17-minute video clearly undercuts that claim.

In a Thanksgiving post, we mentioned this software as one of nine reasons to wear a tinfoil hat.

The video shows the software logging Eckhart?s online search of ?hello world.? That?s despite Eckhart using the HTTPS version of Google which is supposed to hide searches from those who would want to spy by intercepting the traffic between a user and Google.

Cringe as the video shows the software logging each number as Eckhart fingers the dialer.

?Every button you press in the dialer before you call,? he says on the video, ?it already gets sent off to the IQ application.?

From there, the data ? including the content of text messages ? is sent to Carrier IQ?s servers, in secret.

By the way, it cannot be turned off without rooting the phone and replacing the operating system. And even if you stop paying for wireless service from your carrier and decide to just use Wi-Fi, your device still reports to Carrier IQ.

It?s not even clear what privacy policy covers this. Is it Carrier IQ?s, your carrier?s or your phone manufacturer?s? And, perhaps, most important, is sending your communications to Carrier IQ a violation of the federal government?s ban on wiretapping?

And even more obvious, Eckhart wonders why aren?t mobile-phone customers informed of this rootkit and given a way to opt-out?

Yahoo Search Algo To Transition To Bing For India, Whilst Google Eyes Southeast Asia!

Back in August 2010, Yahoo! announced the transition of its US search results property to Microsoft Bing.

This was followed by Yahoo! sending out updates announcing the migration of its Yahoo's European organic search results to Bing's search last month. And now this transition is slowly making its way to India market. The entire transition process is expected to be completed by mid-September.

As of now it is not really clear as to how Yahoo's algorithm transition is going to impact the organic search results for Chinese speaking cities such as Hong Kong and Taiwan where Yahoo domination still continues.

Meanwhile, Yahoo's Net Index A Study for Southeast Asia sheds light upon consumer insights for the advertisers that are targeting these emerging markets:

Philippines Market:

As per the study in partnership with Nielsen, search plays a rather important role in the overall engagement on the Internet. About 80% of Filipinos go online for leisure and entertainment purposes from 68% listening to international music, 65% for local music, 59% view photos and videos to 55% play games.

Whereas 82% of Filipinos youth engage with social networking activities as opposed to search in the country.

Meanwhile the focus on entertainment and social networking suggests that the 10 to 29 year old demographic still remains the core audience segment that drives Internet adoption in the Philippines.

Malaysian Market:

Social networking is the most dominant platform in the Malaysian market with 90% communication taking place over social networks. This increased by additional 29% since 2010. Whilst accessing the search engines comes a close second with 89%.

Malaysians seems to be getting quite complacent about buying things like mobiles, clothes etc. online with 40% of shopping happened over Internet using their credit cards.

Google Expansion Plans:

Southeast Asian markets are a strong hold of the search giant where they have set up a new office in Bangkok, Thailand a few days back, followed by setting up an officie in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in January. The Internet firm intends on hiring about 100 people in Southeast Asia alone and 400 more in the region by the end of this year.

Google also plans to open an office in Indonesia in before 2012, that targets the small and medium-sized businesses, according to media reports.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt was in Indonesia in July to meet with the vice president where he talked about the strength of the market, "There are 50 million small businesses in Indonesia, just numerically those will be the engine of growth for the future economy," Schmidt said.

Japan Market:

According to the Impress R&D's annual white paper on Japan's latest Internet data, Motoko Hunt, search consultant for AJPR and chairman of SEMPO Asia Pacific Committee, the use of Twitter and Facebook are on a rise in Japan. She also advised of bearing in mind the smartphone search marketing for you online marketing strategy in case you are targeting the 20- to 40- year-old demographic.

Google Analytics not as huge in China

Despite Google Analytics being the most popular web analytics tool for online marketers globally, In China Mainland it's a different story altogether. Michael Xu, senior VP of business operations at Gridsum and co-chairman for SEMPO Greater China puts forwards the two reasons why:

"1. Severe data inaccuracy because Google quit Mainland China market.

2. Requires medium level programming skills but provides little service or support."

SEM tools for the Chinese market

For the Chinese market one needs the mix of both the search and social. Microblogging, should be in the forefront according to the CNNIC study that revealed more than 195 million users are currently on the platform.
