Google Places Pages Undergo Major Overhaul

Dont expect to see any Yelp or CitySearch reviews in Google Place pages anymore, they have been removed all together by Google. TripAdvisor, Yelp and Citysearch have long been complaining that...

...Google was stealing their customer reviews about local businesses and reproducing them on its very own Place pages. Now Google have finally taken action andremoved all reviews from external sites, so now only reviews written by Google users will be displayed.

The impact has been immediate for some businesses. For example, Keens Steakhouse in New York displayed 60 reviews last Friday, compared with more than 3,000 last month. While San Fransico based Paxtis Chicago Pizza saw the number of reviews drop from1,110 reviews to only 171 soon after the clean up.

Google Places Product Manager, Avni Shah, announced the following in her official blog post:

Based on careful thought about the future direction of Place pages, and feedback weve heard over the past few months, review snippets from other web sources have now been removed from Place pages. Rating and review counts reflect only those thatve been written by fellow Google users, and as part of our continued commitment to helping you find what you want on the web, were continuing to provide links to other review sites so you can get a comprehensive view of locations across the globe.

TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer said Googles decision is a positive sign, but Id love for them to come out with a statement that we promise not to do it again.

The result of this change has resulted in Google Places pages now looking a lot more neat and tidy with Google focusing more on the reviews, updates, pictures being provided by their users rather than external sources.

Although Google claims these changes are simply one of its constant attempts to improve the overall users experience, there is an underlying motive. The real inside story is that these changes came into effect just a week after Yelp took a legal step against Google  in regards to anti-trust issues.

I think this isnt the last we will hear about Google, Yelp and customer reviews " we will be sure to keep you updated with any more news at it surfaces.

Google Releases Instant Preview Checker in Webmaster Tools

Google launched the Instant Previews in their SERPs back in November. The feature allows searchers to see a snapshot of the search listing to determine its relevancy before entering the site.

However website owners have been complaining about how the pages are being rendered via the instant previews.

Google responded to the criticism highlighting that these problems were due to blocked resources due to a robots.txt entry, cloaking, and poor alternative content when Flash is unavailable.

To help webmasters deal with these problems, Google has launched a new "Instant Preview tool" in the Labs section of Webmaster Tools to help webmasters diagnose the problems. Using these tools webmasters can see what their sites will look like on Instant preview and correct the errors. The tool is presently available in English only and can be found under the "Labs" tab in Webmaster Tools.

Google explained on their official blog post:
"Here, you can input the URL of any page on your site. We'll then fetch the page from your site and try to render it both as it would display in Chrome and through our Instant Preview renderer. Please keep in mind that both of these renders are done using a recent build of Webkit which doesn't include plugins such as Flash or Silverlight, so it's important to consider the value of providing alternative content for these situations. Alternative content can be helpful to search engines, and visitors to your site without the plugin would benefit as well. Below the renders, you'll also see automated feedback on problems our system can detect such as missing or roboted resources".

Webmasters can see how their pages will look in Instant preview at http://www.google.com/landing/instantpreviews/#a

Google on Privacy and Personal Information

The All Things Digital D9 conference is a place where the best and the brightest of the tech industry wrestle (metaphorically) with the sharpest interviewers that tech journalism has to offer.

Among the more interesting interviews this year was the discussion with Eric Schmidt that launched 2011s D9. Shcmidt, Google's Executive Chair, covered a great number of topics, but one area of special interest is Google's stance on privacy, data control, and sharing personal information.

Schmidt stated that Google is committed to allowing anonymous searches for anyone who isn't logged into their Google account. Further, Google's privacy dashboard gives users access to a summary of stored data and an option to delete it. "We tell people what we know," said Schmidt. "And we give them the choice of getting it deleted." When it comes to privacy in the Android market, however, the concerns change. Since third party groups are accessing personal data, Google can do little beyond informing users of what data is being shared. Google has no intent to do more, however, since they prefer avoiding curation and increasing a "free market" model of app competition.

Despite Schmidt's upbeat and reassuring comments about privacy, certain concerns do remain. It's known that Google tracks at least some basic information for anonymous users, including the IP address " which tags the identity of your computer and your region of origin. This information can (although it isn't often) forfeited to government authorities based on a court order.

There's been enough controversy about Google's privacy policy that entire search engines have established themselves on the ground of being more private than Google. Case in point: Duck Duck Go, whose slogan of "Google tracks you. We don't," has worked as the core of the upstart search site's advertising efforts.
